This week we are in the classroom writing rough copies of our descriptive reports. Make sure your introduction has a hook, thesis statement, and a plan sentence (see review attached here). We will also have our last spelling test next Tuesday. The assignment page is due that same day and will be one of the last chances you have to bring up your current grade. If you have any missing assignments, the last day to submit those is Monday.

Today we are looking at plagiarism as we start to look at how to write a descriptive report. Reports require you to read the information of others and put it together in a way that works for your report. Copying the work of other people and claiming it as your own is called plagiarism. Don't do it! Tomorrow, I'll share with you the specifics of this assignment.
HOMEWORK: Weekly homework is due on Thursday this week. For the daily edits, you must find the errors in the paragraph and correct them so it makes sense.

I passed back spelling test 5 today and was not pleased with some of the results. Not only does spelling introduce you to new words to expand your speaking and writing vocabulary, it helps identify parts of speech and notice common spelling patterns. It does require some study however. Take a few minutes each night to study your words. I handed out list 6 today. Here's hoping for better results! Welcome back! Today we are going to start right where we left off with Among the Hidden - Chapter 21-25. Remember when we read last, Jen got furious while she was on the chat room with the other hidden children. They were joking about fake IDs and Jen doesn't want one until she is free to have her own name on it. The rally she is planning to protest the population law is just three months away and she wants Luke to go with her. After that we'll work on a pronoun mini lesson and we'll switch our focus back to persuasive writing.

We will look at what you learned about the characters of Robin Hood by using the different methods of characterization: how the characters act, what they say, what they look like, and how other characters react to them. Finally, we'll move on to discuss conflict in stories. We now know that it's often the antagonist that creates problems (conflict) for the protagonist. What are the different types of conflicts and how do they affect a story? |

First, you have a new seating plan, then you'll get your homework duotangs back. I'm not giving weekly homework this week because of the time missed. You'll be reading from Among the Hidden. Luke saw a face in the window of the sports family house next door when there should be no one home at that time. Could there be a hidden child next door? Maybe we will find out today! You will have a quiz on the reading tomorrow so listen carefully! Then we are taking some notes about characterization. Characterization is basically all of the different ways an author tells us about characters in the stories we read. You'll be watching Robin Hood looking for the different methods of characterization: how the characters act, what they say, what they look like, and how other characters react to them. We'll go over the information you've gathered tomorrow. I do want to get back to our persuasive essay. The storm days have destroyed our writing schedule. We'll play this by ear. It may have to wait until after March Break. I'll get back to you on this. |

We are marking homework today. Big things are happening next week. We'll begin a new novel called Among the Hidden and we'll be starting a persuasive writing piece. Among the Hidden: In a future where the Population Police enforce the law limiting a family to only two children, Luke, an illegal third child, has lived all his twelve years in isolation and fear on his family's farm in this start to the Shadow Children series from Margaret Peterson Haddix. Luke has never been to school. He's never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend's house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend. Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police. He's lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family's farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside. |

No class today - Guest speaker Mr. Brent Sherrard. Here is the blurb about his book Wasted. "If there''s one person Jacob is never going to be like, it''s his alcoholic father. But Jacob is brought face-to-face with his own addictions when his father ends up in the hospital. Certain that he can easily overcome his drug and alcohol abuse, Jacob discovers just how powerful dependency can be. A terrible tragedy takes Jacob to the breaking point where he will have to decide, once and for all, whether or not he is going to go through life wasted. Tomorrow we will miss LA because of our guest speaker. On Wednesday you'll have a pop quiz (surprise!) on cause and effect and we'll start reading an article about the country of North Korea.

Pop quiz today! Name the 7 coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS). Most of you got 100%! If you didn't, we will continue to work on this in class. We also looked at how we can use context clues to figure out words in a text while we are reading. For example, a bow on a gift and a bow of a ship are spelled the same, but we pronounce them differently. We use context clues in a text to figure out which "bow" we should say. Homework is a chance for you to practice your grammar on your own - think of it as a test to see if you "get it" without any help from me or your peers. - We finished our lesson on reading with a purpose and we talked about cryptozoology - the study of animals which may or may not exist. Tomorrow we will read the short story called "Sasquatch."
- Make sure you bring you LA duotang, your agenda, and a silent reading book to class every day. Every thing we do in LA should be inside that duotang, not loose in your locker!
*Thank you for your kind birthday wishes! It was a great day.

-Two words to describe our day today: information overload! We had a very busy and very hot first day in grade 8! - We reviewed my classroom expectations: 1. Raise your hand for permission to speak or to get the teacher's attention. 2. Follow instructions quickly. 3. Appropriate language always. 4. Keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself. HOMEWORK: Update student information sheet, sign the parent student agreement in your agenda, and bring a book to read during silent reading. How to choose a best fit book:
Select a page in a book that looks like it might interest you. Start reading. If you count to 5 words you don't know before you get to the bottom of that page, maybe it is not the best fit book for you at the moment. Make note of the title and come back to it later. |
